How I Teach My Kids to Learn This Business
Published: Sun, 10/16/22
Awww you guys! Y'all are so sweet - I've gotten dozens and dozens of emails about Scarlett's free PLR gift. Thank you! I can't wait to read them to her Monday and she'll be making a video response to everyone.
She does know what I did in sneaking it as a free gift to you. She's so nervous. I told her, though - I have SO many people who've been on my list since 2006 - when she was TWO years old. Many of my people are watching her journey in a sentimental way. It's like she has hundreds of aunts and uncles cheering her on. That put her mind at ease.
I hope this gives her confidence. You know girls that age - or any age and gender for that matter - thinks she's not pretty, not talented, not a good writer. And of course my own opinion gets dismissed because I'm Mom. Ha ha. So hearing that you liked her writing (and want more) will hopefully give her a boost to set aside her worry.
FYI: Tomorrow's email goes out at 9 AM EST and if you need to see what limited PLR is left and see what big, discounted store bundles are available, go here.
How I Teach My Kids to Learn This Business
When I got the many replies from people about Scarlett's journey to build an online business, it often came along with questions about how to teach your own kids OR how to learn the same way I'm teaching her. I had many ask if I'd make my lessons to her a course.I might do certain challenges/courses in the future but nothing right now.
But I can tell you what I'm doing - and a LOT of it is NOT be holding her hand! On the contrary. I'm teaching her how to learn on her own.
When I told her to create a report all I told her is that my list likes marketing topics, and since she's learning marketing, it'd be a good one to research and learn from.
I asked her to name some marketing topics so she said "blogging, affiliate marketing, traffic, social media..." I said, "Okay, pick one, come up with a slant and outline it then research and write it."
She goes in her room no her computer and starts learning affiliate marketing for beginners. She told me she spots patterns of what's taught and is worried when she comes to me about teaching the same types of things like picking a niche. I explain that there are many topics that HAVE to be covered by everyone teaching it, such as picking a niche.
There's a difference between knowing something needs to covered and copying someone (she's seen what's been happing lately w/all the lazy people ripping me off w/ideas, sales copy, etc.).
So I told her to absorb the info, spot patterns, and come up with something from scratch. So she did. I have always taught my kids to close all pages and write from scratch. NEVER rewrite anyone - such a scumbag thing to do.
I told her to make sure everything was in a logical order. IE: You can't buy a domain or create content until you pick a niche or do your keyword research.
I don't WANT Scarlett being handed steps verbatim. You don't master things that way. You learn best by trying on your own, having gentle feedback (like y'all provided for her).
Because of your $0.02, she now knows to include a conclusion and she has great ideas for taking the 9 steps and fleshing them out into full "first steps" reports, which she's planning on doing. Those were repeated patterns in the feedback.
Another thing: She said, "Why are you paying me when you gave the report away?" I said, "Because you didn't make that decision - you worked thinking you'd get paid. It wouldn't be fair if I said something like, your payment is the feedback you're getting." I believe in being rewarded for your hard work. And she worked hard to learn and write from scratch.
She also got a lesson in the power of branding and giving things away. She gifted my list, Arun's list, Liz Tomey's followers and others who shared the page on their FB or to their list and in exchange, she got insight AND some branding.
People now know the quality of her work, not just that they've seen her grow up over the years.
I told her I'm going to have her create a video to thank everyone and she's nervous. As beautiful as she is, she doesn't feel like that - she's nervous about being on camera and looking or sounding stupid. She's incredibly intelligent - always a straight A student, well spoken, etc. But we all beat ourselves up.
She also knows someone once compared me to a wildebeest. LOL! But that's me - she's her. And I don't even care about someone doing that now. You're going to have haters. It's a lesson that needs to be learned. I'll also be teaching her how to create a big launch and maybe spend a month creating it and then recruiting some good people as affiliates (along with who to and not to work with).
Y'all know the basics of what has to be done. It's info that's free everywhere. You just have to start working.
My kids and I were talking about the Vegas fiction writer's conference and wondering if we'll get the detailed advice we hope for. But I told them that if not, oh well! We're still going to hit the ground running in January w/some fiction careers and if we stumble and learn along the way, so be it. We can Google, YouTube or if we can't find the info, just see what sticks when we try it.
Remember - I don't do coaching but I have never not helped someone when they ask me for it. If you have a specific question, email me. I will do my best to share what I can. Just be specific. Don't ask, "How can I make money online," or, "how can I be an affiliate." Google that. Ask me questions you can't find publicly.
Tiff :)
