Fiction Journey - Excitement, Finally!
I told y'all that I had paid for a top notch content edit (one that tells you how you're doing with plot, pacing, dialogue - all the stuff that makes or breaks your future potential). It was finished yesterday and she set up a call to go over everything with me. To date, I've only ever had family and good friends edit. Not a stranger. I started out telling her that I had thick skin, I have a successful business, and I just want hard truths. I don't want to waste my time if I'm not good enough.
We spent a long time talking and I just had SO much fun. I am such a hermit now and I rarely just ENJOY people but I felt like she was an old friend and we laughed at the same time, joked and stuff - it was an amazing conversation.
She told me the things I'm good at first - dialogue, pacing, spinning a good story, etc. She said I have natural rhythm and the narrative was easy and entertaining. She said that yes, I should absolutely continue doing this.
She also told me where I needed to improve. For example, my story has one big business legal set up problem I goofed on. Most people wouldn't recognize it but she knew so others may, too. She also told me to slow down! In some places where the reader wants to linger and enjoy, I sped right up and hurried through it.
Guess where those parts were? It's a clean romance, but it was in the romance parts. I know for a fact this is because I was in an abusive marriage and I just have ZERO feel for that type of relationship anymore, so I'll have to think back to before he who shall not be named and remember old boyfriends. Kinda sad, but it is what it is. I know where I need to slow down and enrich the story.
This is one reason I never read romance (or really want to write it, even though I find writing it overall easy because it's such a formula - they meet, fall in love, things go wrong, all hope seems lost, but they recover and live happily ever after. I personally like heart-wrenching women's fiction books that show how humans get through situations - like Kristin Hannah (my favorite author). I don't like predictable. She did say my book wasn't predictable and she enjoyed the surprises.
I was dying laughing at one point because she said I had this heartfelt character (grandma with the beginnings of dementia) and every time she appeared, they'd lead her back to her room and put her in bed. She said, "Let the old lady interact more!" LOL! She's right. I realized how often she's led back to her room. So that'll be fun to deepen when I go through my edits.
The thing I thought was corny (my twist), she really enjoyed. She didn't expect it and apparently I'd done it the right way.
Today I got a message from her because I had linked her to my last book, which was a women's fiction (not romance). I told her how badly I'd messed that up - it was 1/3 women's fiction, 1/3 later in life romance, and 1/3 psychological thriller - a pure disaster. LOL! She said to take it down for now but she said, "You are a good write and you have a good understanding of the complex human condition, so women's fiction is probably where you belong."
And THAT, my friends, is the validation I needed to go for it.
Tiff ;)
