"I'll only care about you if you fork over money."

Hi !

Cold, rainy and totally cozy here in Dallas-Fort Worth and I am LOVING it. I'm about to sit down and brainstorm some fiction and watch TV and it's just going to ooze relaxation for me.

Okay let's talk about the subject of this email.

What if you found out that the ONLY way you were getting any care from me is if you paid me first?

Need any sympathy about your situation? Get that wallet out!

Need to ask a quick question from someone you trust? Cashola, please!

How. Freaking. Gross.

And yet that's JUST the advice I saw being doled out from someone in a well-known forum.

The conversation was all about authenticity and how genuine it was. Apparently, some people are really good at faking it. Fake caring.

I mean, why?

I don't get it. But whatever...what was even worse was the guy who said, "true authenticity is best kept to paying customers."

I'm assuming because your time is valuable, as your list grows, you need to weed out the freebie seekers, etc. But man, this just reeks of ick to me.

I'm sorry, but man or woman, I prefer to do business with marketers in any niche who genuinely care about the customer. No faking necessary.

Now do I expect someone to hold my hand through 2 hours of problem solving without paying for coaching? No, your time is valuable, of course. But caring doesn't take 2 hours. You can genuinely care about your "customers who haven't spent a penny with you yet" and show true sympathy for them, maybe direct them to a trustworthy product or blog post or whatever.

The whole conversation was just so disappointing to me. I remember traveling with my dad, a WWII, Korea and Vietnam vet - who sold life and health insurance to individuals who had sent in a "lead card."

I can't count the number of times we went to meet with someone, and I watched my dad ask them questions (caring, human to human questions) and if he discovered the cost would put them in a strain, he'd say so. Others in his office took the people's money so they could win the new TV or whatever prize was up - because they didn't care at all.

How hard is that?

You know what? If caring is so difficult for you, then be blunt about it. Have that "Rich Jerk" persona that lets people know up front they shouldn't depend on you unless they develop deep pockets first.

Okay end of that.
