Comfort Zone and Fear Tips, Inside Sneak Peek (Last Chance)
Published: Sun, 12/29/19
Today is Sunday and it's a day of relaxation for me. I have a little over a week left with my baby girl at home before school starts back up. We need to go shopping before then - she got all sorts of gift cards and cash she wants to blow, so I'll play chauffeur.
I'm gearing up to work on fiction (did I tell y'all I'm starting from scratch for the 3rd or 4th time on this same book? LOL). It's a good book idea but I hadn't nailed down the slant yet. I think I have it now.
It's so hard doing something intimidating (more on that below).

Comfort Zone and Fear
So writing this book is WAY outside of my comfort zone. I'm terrified. Wish I'd never told anyone my pen name. I'm the kind of person who almost has to be pushed outside of my comfort zone. I don't do it voluntarily. But there are some ways I feel more comfortable pushing myself, which are:
1. Increasing My Knowledge
Whether it's facts about a vacation destination (like how I studied all the transportation in NYC before visiting) or learning more about how to write better, it helps if you just absorb more information.
Being informed feels like being armed. Protected. If you feel unsure about emailing your list, learn everything you can about email marketing as you implement it. It'll help!
2. Network with People Who Have Done What You Want to Do
I networked with people who live in or had been to NYC before I went to ask questions. I also network with authors. Especially those in the genre I'm getting into. Sometimes just having someone else say, "You'll do fine!" is enough to quell my insane fears and take it to a level I'm capable of handling.
3. Play Devil's Advocate
I am a master of this game! "What could go wrong?" EVERYTHING! So I go through it one by one. And for each possibility, each worst case scenario, I come up with some solutions. At the very least, I come to a feeling of acceptance of what will happen if I fail somehow, how it will feel, and it's comforting knowing it's not as bad as I first imagined it would be.
I could get lost in NYC. Scary for a hermit, but then I what, ask someone how to get to where I need to go? I could avoid getting lost and take Ubers instead (that's what I did by the way LOL). I could get bad reviews on my book. My friends could all be talking about me behind my back cringing at my efforts. And then what, I have to learn more about that genre and writing craft or pursue a different genre? Okay. Not the end of the world.
Always think about how you can push farther and farther outside of your comfort zone.
Make life happen the way you want it to happen.
Tiff ;)
