Big Decision, Free Content: Think and Aim Big
Published: Sun, 04/26/20
We made a big decision in our family this weekend - to officially end Scarlett's 10-year journey at her college preparatory school. It's a bittersweet decision. She'd been asking for awhile to do this, but I worried she'd regret it. Since the lockdown orders, she's thrived SO much with a better schedule - she's been more productive and less stressed (academic pressure was a 6 AM to 10 PM or even 1 AM ordeal).
So we went for it. Part of me is sad because I worked so hard all those years to have my kids in the top school - and part of me is relieved. All the things that were wrong about it were highlighted during this lockdown, and I kept thinking they were minor when they really weren't. She loves the online school experience. The only thing she'll miss is her friends, but they mostly communicate on social media anyway and we can have them meet up in person. I woke up to a sweet note she left me on my desk thanking me for having faith in her to do this. She deserves it - she's always made straight As.
What I LOVE is that she's pursuing an entrepreneurial career. She's amazing with graphics and fiction, so she's working on a series for Kindle. She's also working for my company as a non fiction writer. And she'll still attend an accredited school - Texas Tech has a distance education program for K-12 and they're ranked one of the top online schools now. So many have graduated from the high school - LeAnn Rimes, Jesse Plemons from Breaking Bad/Friday Night Lights, Olympians, Disney channel stars, etc. It's grown a lot since my son did it in elementary school.
For ME, this changes everything!
So much more time. I had to spend about 2-3 hours a day in commutes, and one thing I promised her when we made this decision together is that if she's pursuing her fiction career, I will buckle down and do it, too. With 3 extra hours to contribute to it, there's no excuse not to.
I'll be devouring a LOT of kindle courses and marketing and ad courses to help me learn that part of the industry. I'll share what I learn or feel is worthwhile with y'all - since it's a fun additional income stream.
