#3 - Becoming Blind to Numbers
My son, Dylan is a personal trainer, but it's a commission-based business. You don't build a business, you don't get paid, period. It's a lot of what we do as online marketers. We have to lead generate, show value, and help change peoples' lives. So we love talking about motivation for our goals and also nitty gritty stuff like business plans. I'm fascinated by his youthful approach and go getter attitude.
Today he was telling me about his habit stacking. He has a monthly meeting with his managers over his business plan and it's cool because they don't JUST go over a "numbers game."
Dylan knows that in order to get up and walk into work revved up and ready to inspire and push people, HE has to FEEL the same way. So sleep is an important thing for him to work on. His manager goes over habits he has to change to fix that. He wants to find time for working out, but he knows (unlike his stubborn mom) that if he sets an unrealistic, stringent goal without changing habits, he'll burn out.
So he started doing workouts 5 days a week. No design for it. Just any type of workout. Sometimes it's the gym. Sometimes it's getting home, about to watch TV or game on Xbox and realizing he needs to drop and do 100 pushups and some squats.
He wants to change the habit.
In that book, Atomic Habits, that I'm reading, it talks about changing your identity to become the person you want to be, and stacking habits until that's just how you live your life.
I'm tired of planning a certain # of hours or minutes or word counts to write fiction, a set # of calories instead of listening to my body, a specific # of minutes to walk.
I'm becoming blind to numbers from this day forward. My focus is change of habits. I want to be the person who "goes for a walk." Walk until I don't feel like I can or want to walk anymore. The kind of person who sits down to write and isn't fretting over whether or not I hit a 3k word count or wrote for 1.5 hours. I want to be the kind of person who eats. Not who eats 1,650 calories and 50% protein or whatever.
Everything is SO complicated with numbers. I hate them.
And it might work for many people.
But for me, I need long-term habit changes. I need to become the person I strive to be - the vision I see when I picture the perfect life I want.
So right now I'm all about routine and habit changes. It doesn't mean you aren't planning and guiding yourself. You're still goal setting, but the goals are consistency-oriented and habitual. And you still check in regularly to see if you're working on those changes or if you're ignoring them.
And if you're ignoring them, you pinpoint your focus on them until they're part of your normal routine.
Tiff ;)
