Watch This Space, Habits and Temptations Cool Method I Read
Published: Sun, 05/26/19
Are you having a nice weekend? We are. It's beautiful weather and I'm working and cleaning house. Did the lawn yesterday and it's MUCH less grueling now, so my stamina is improving. I actually kind of like mowing. The smell of fresh cut grass is a wonderful scent to me. Plus, I get some sunshine and fresh air and activity.
So real quick, a couple of things:
1. Watch for my email tomorrow at 11 AM EST. I have an exclusive huge bonus for JR Lang's launch AND a review of an incredible course from a success story.
2. I'm reading that Atomic Habits book and had a wow moment. It talks about ways to get remarkable results through habit change, right?
Well one part I'm on right now is called Temptation Bundling. I did this for awhile - in order to watch my shows I'd recorded, I needed to be on my bike. It made biking more attractive because it meant I got to get caught up on my shows.
The author takes it one step further and pairs temptation bundling with habit stacking. It's brilliant.
So for instance, I know I have a habit of getting my coffee every morning. I NEED to write fiction. I WANT to check all my news sites and social media.
So I pair it all - after I get my coffee, I will write a page of fiction and then I get to check all my news sites and social media.
I can keep going through my day. After I eat lunch, I will mow the lawn and then sit down to watch an episode of a show I like. It's rewards based on productivity and effort. I feel accomplished and yet rewarded with things I enjoy - relaxing, entertainment.
So figure out your habit (coffee, whatever), follow it with your need (what task do you need to do), and then follow that with your want (relax, etc.). Stack it as much as you want. Keep going through your day if you want. Design it and tailor it to your personal preferences.
It's MUCH better than "I have this list of 25 things I have to do today and IF I finish, MAYBE I'll have time for something I like." NOPE! That's not enjoying life. That's a punishment.
And what usually happens is you procrastinate and burn out, flitting around not really enjoying what you're doing because you feel guilty about your lack of productivity, and you wasted your day without getting stuff done AND without fully enjoying it.
This is awesome. I'm going to whip up a stacked day design today for me to implement tomorrow and see how it goes. I'll let you know.
Let me know if you try it, too!
Tiff ;)
