Published: Wed, 07/17/19
Well I just ordered some diuretics to help get this knee inflammation down. It's crazy how bad my body hangs onto water head to toe when my knee hurts. I've never taken a diuretic but I hear it helps so I'll try anything. I think my body's getting payback for all the walking I put it through last week. :)
More Trip Report at the end of this email (skip if you're a business only kinda subscriber - no worries). For now, here's what I have for you:

Trip Report for NYC - Day 2
Here's where the "I don't care about you" (and don't worry, I'm not offended) people can exit the email. The rest, get ready to hear about my second (and 1st full) day in NYC.Let me just say that almost everyone is SO nice there! The stereotype of “rude” NYers is all wrong. People were so pleasant and I can totally understand why some would be cranky the way tourists behave – stopping in the middle of the busy sidewalk to selfie, etc. But we had a lovely experience.
And the patriotism! It was a beautiful thing to see. Flags everywhere. My heart melted.
One negative thing was the summertime city smells. It’s like rancid, rotting food and you walk up to a crosswalk and BAM! It hits you. LOL There was less of it outside of the main busy city, but here and there it’s not a good scent. I laughed when a young mom w/a toddler in a stroller cut in front of us waiting at a crosswalk and the smell hit her and she said "Nope" and turned around and walked away. LOL!
Transportation wise, we didn’t ride the subway (bad knees/big stairs) or bus anywhere (long rides which would have taken away from how much we could get done). We took a few cabs but mostly Lyft Lux and spent about $1,100 total for the entire week. It was worth it. I'll explain more why later. I started out trying to cab but they were SO hot that we ended up using Lyft and getting the nice ride with AC and pleasant drivers everywhere.
So we wake up after our first night in NYC and it's our first full day: Monday the 8th.
We walked to Brooklyn Diner in Times Square. The service was great and friendly. The inside almost looked like a train depot or something. But the food was lacking. Not bad. Just so plain it was weird. We got pancakes and French toast. It was neat sitting by the window and people watching. You can definitely tell tourtists apart from locals.
We walked around (tried to find the Naked Cowboy - an iconic personality in Times Square - but never saw him) and went into Sephora since my daughter had gift cards. Walgreens was 3 stories in Times Square! LOL. We didn’t really see much to do so we decided to go on to our next stop. It’s odd – Times Square looks like you could spend hours there on TV and the Internet, but once you get there it’s restaurants, a few stores you’d see elsewhere and lots of crowds that aren't pleasant to be in.
Unfortunately, a crazy guy who was kicking chairs and cussing to himself stormed up to us demanding we buy him food. I’d been told to ignore them, so we did – well that just pissed him off even more, so he began shouting at us and I said, "Sorry, I don’t have anything," so he cussed us out more and went away. This upset my daughter a lot. She was scared and didn’t want to be there anymore. Here, our homeless aren't aggressive. We routinely create blessing bags which we give to them with toiletries, snacks, a little cash and gift cards and hand them out. But there, it seems a bit more dangerous or unnerving.
So we hailed a cab to Battery Park and rode the Sea Glass Carousel. One of y'all told me about this and it was a GREAT recommendation! Wish it would have been at night but we got there early. We walked to the edge of the water to look at the Statue of Liberty from afar. Then we walked to the Charging Bull, who had a long line of people waiting to touch his um, "privates" (it's considered good luck for wealth) and take pictures from the front, too. LOL. We didn't get up close due to the crowd, so I just snapped a pic as we walked away.
The buildings in NYC are gorgeous. I saw so many intricate details and faces and scenes on them. Do make sure you look for that everywhere. We went to the Oculus and I wish we’d just walked in to look and left, but we decided to walk around. Ended up being nothing we wanted to see in it, and a lot of wear and tear on my knee.
Stopped by Burger King for water and drinks where a crazy businessman got mad at me for handing him napkins when he said he needed some and I handed them to him. LOL! He threw them down in front of me and got his own. Alrighty then. I was off to a good start. Ha ha.
Then we arrived at the 9/11 memorial and museum. It was so moving. I walked to both memorial pools and happened to stand by Todd Beamer’s name on accident, which made tears just stream down my face remembering his story in particular. They got us into the museum way earlier than our ticket time. We didn’t do a guided tour. Just walked it ourselves. Incredibly touching. Brought me back to that day. Lots of tears. Lots of pride in our country and the world in general - in good people.
For dinner we went to Tony’s di Napoli in Times Square. It was surprisingly great! We hadn’t planned on eating there, but since our schedule was messed up, we got in early and they seated us right away. They served us bread first, then fried mozzarella. We had some family style penne pasta with broccoli and chicken and it was so good! Server was amazing!
Then we walked to Carlos Bakery to take back to our hotel. We each got a couple of things to try – just because we’re big cake boss fans. I got a cannoli and a lobster tail pastry that was supposed ot have chocolate in it but it had something else. It was okay. The kids loved their stuff.
On this day I realized trying to look decent in NYC in the summer is pointless. All the clothes I’d fretted about and bought? Nah. I wore whatever was coolest. Lots of tank tops - flabby arms and all. Did. Not. Care. Hair styling? Nope. Frizz city! Stick that sucker up in a hair clip or ponytail and go. The humidity was so dehydrating. I wanted to drinks gallons of water.
We went back to our hotel and honestly, we were a mix of emotions. On one hand, I'd gotten to pay my respects to 9/11 victims and see the Statue of Liberty and ride the beautiful and unique carousel and have great meals. On the other, it was way more walking in humidity than I thought there'd be. When something says "3 blocks" it doesn't sound like a lot. But uphill, in the heat and humidity with sardine packed crowds, it gets to ya.
Fortunately, the trip improved a LOT from there. More about that tomorrow! Here are some pics from this day (me with my Cake Boss cannoli, me and my kids in Times Square, Todd Beamer's memorial name, Tony di Napoli dinner, and the sea glass carousel we rode):
More to come!
Tiff :)
